Theme 2018: Measuring antibiotics for better healthcare

In this News Item we are happy to announce the theme of SensUs 2018: Measuring antibiotics for better healthcare. This year the SensUs teams will develop innovative biosensors for the detection of vancomycin, which is an important antibiotic drug. The biosensors can have impact in several ways:

Antibiotics

Antibiotic drugs are widely used in society. Unfortunately, the massive use of the drugs causes Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR), which has become a serious global threat. It is important that last-resort antibiotics, such as vancomycin, are used as efficiently and effectively as possible, which is where antibiotics measurements can play a role.

Drug monitoring

The monitoring of drug levels helps for providing patients always with the right therapeutic dose, thereby increasing the effectiveness and reducing side effects of drug treatment. This Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) falls in the scope of personalized medicine and precision medicine, which aim to perfectly tune medical treatment to the needs of individual people.

We are looking forward to see what the teams will develop this year and how their biosensors will help patients to receive the best possible treatments and help society in its fight against antimicrobial resistance.
