SensUs Innovation Day 2019

SensUs 2019 has challenged talented student teams from all over the world to develop innovative biosensing systems for the measurement of adalimumab, a biological drug that is used to treat rheumatic disease. The teams will present their work on August 30 at the Eindhoven University of Technology, Atlas building, in an event full of students, industry, patients and healthcare professionals. The SensUs event is a unique chance to listen to inspiring talks, explore innovations and expand your network. The program can be found below.

Workshop 1 - Rheumatoid arthritis patients - ReumaZorg Nederland

What does it feel like to have rheumatoid arthritis (RA)? What symptoms are you confronted with? What does a treatment look like, but most of all … what does it do with your life?

About 30 years ago rheumatism was symbolized by joint swelling and a wheelchair. This is not the case anymore thanks to medication. However, rheumatism still cannot be cured. Almost 23 million people are fighting against inflammation, pain and fatigue.

In this workshop, given by ReumaZorg Nederland, two patients with RA share their personal story. They show their lives before and after the diagnosis of RA. How do they manage to enjoy life despite their condition?

Workshop 2 - Design thinking & Co-creation - Slimmer Leven

Design Thinking is the corner stone of many innovation projects. This workshop will provide you with three methods that can be found in the designer's tool kit! One method is about creating ideas, the other two with the aim to test those ideas. See you there!

-
Workshop 3 - Biohacking - Peter Joosten

Peter Joosten is a biohacker and DIY-futurist. He investigates the impact of biohacking, human enhancement and transhumanism in his keynotes, articles and Youtube channel. He is a TEDx speaker and consultant at various companies and institutions. He gave talks at events like Biohacker Summit Stockholm (Sweden), University College London (United Kingdom), Darefest Antwerpen (Belgium) and KPN Telecom (the Netherlands).

He is the curator of the platform Superhuman Talks where he writes and interviews experts about the coming era of upgraded humans. He wrote the (Dutch) book ‘Biohacking’ about human enhancement and its implication on organizations, education and healthcare. He is a guest lecturer at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (master Human Technology Interaction) and the Hogeschool Utrecht (theme: human enhancement). He was member of the 2019 class of the Biohack Academy at De Waag in Amsterdam.

Peter was interviewed for a variety of international media outlets, for example The Biohacking Secrets Show podcast (United States), Digital.se (Sweden), Decoding Superhuman (United States), How to live to 200 (United States) and The Bio Alchemy podcast (Australia).

Nanoparticles: new immunological medicines

Willem Mulder and Roy van der Meel are professor and assistant professor of Precision Medicine at the department of Biomedical Engineering of Eindhoven University of Technology. Their research focuses on precision imaging and targeted therapy. They have established a library encompassing nanomaterials derived from natural lipoproteins, which allows meticulously designing nano-immunotherapies. The overarching goal is to institutionalize nanotechnologies for precision immunotherapy and immuno-imaging [read more].

-
Sensor technology for continuous immuno-monitoring

Healthcare is in demand of technologies for real-time sensing in order to continuously guard the state of patients. Eindhoven University of Technology is developing novel technologies for the continuous monitoring of biomarkers, such as small molecules, proteins, and nucleic acids. Dr. Sergelen will give an overview of the field of continuous monitoring and focus on upcoming solutions to enable the monitoring of patients receiving immuno-therapies [read more].

-
Biomarkers & big data for clinical immunology

Johannes Textor leads the Computational Immunology group at the department of Tumor Immunology at the Radboud Institute of Molecular Life Sciences. The group develops and applies computational models and statistical methods for biomedical research. Both Computational Immunology and Artificial Immune Systems are the main fields of his expertise. He applies tools and methods of math and computer science to immunological questions. An example is the model that was built around the immune systems cell repertoires that process and store information [read more].
