Introduction

Sensus 2019 is only a few days away. On the 30th of August the SensUs contest day will take place. 14 participating teams from all over the world will show their innovative biosensor prototypes to the world. The SensUs event is a unique chance to listen to inspiring talks, explore innovations and expand your network.

Theme 2019

The theme of SensUs 2019 is Managing rheumatic disease by measuring with ease. SensUs 2019 has challenged teams to develop innovative biosensing systems for the detection of the anti-inflammatory drug adalimumab. Adalimumab is used for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease with a worldwide prevalence of 1%. Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis experience constant pain and difficulty with everyday chores. Adalimumab relieves the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis by suppressing the body’s defence system and inhibiting inflammation. Adalimumab is not an adequate treatment for every patient. Patients may not have benefits or may even lose treatment benefits over time. A biosensor that can precisely measure the level of adalimumab in a patient will therefore be of great value in managing rheumatic diseases.

Awards

During the SensUs contest day, the teams will be assessed for several awards: the analytical performance award, the creativity award, the translation potential award and the public inspiration award. The analytical performance award is won by the team with the best performing biosensor, this performance is calculated via an algorithm. The juries of the translation potential award and the creativity award consist of medical experts, patients and technical experts. The translation potential award will be presented to the team with the most suitable and thoughtful future applications in healthcare and towards industrialization. The creativity award will be presented to the team that has the most surprising results and has thereby set a new standard for the upcoming years. The winner of the public inspiration award will be determined by all visitors and viewers of SensUs 2019.

Workshops

There will be three workshops given during the contest day. The workshops will be suitable for the general audience. The first workshop will be given by ReumaZorg Nederland on how it is like to live with rheumatoid arthritis. Another workshop is by SlimmerLeven on design thinking. The last workshop is given by Peter Joosten, a biohacker and a DIY-futurist, this workshop will focus on the impact of biohacking, human enhancement and transhumanism.

Symposium and Professional course

Visitors will also be able to visit a scientific symposium and professional course, course organized by Dr. Bart van den Bemt, Prof. Mart van de Laar and Prof. Menno Prins. The program contains lectures on upcoming technologies for clinical immunology in the fields of therapy, monitoring and clinical data. The lectures will be followed by discussions on the translation to the clinic and impact on patients. For more information see www.sensus.org.
